Christmas light shot

I was setting up before a shoot today with my lovely Nicole when I had an idea for some fun Christmas light layering.  I found an 8x10 picture frame and wrapped it in standard white Christmas lights, then held it in one hand and shot through it with my 50mm at 1/60, f1.6, 160 ISO to create the image at the bottom of this post.

You have to try this out, it is so easy and you get images that have that Christmas cheer without adding fake effects later.
Sorry for the rough diagram, but I wanted to show you how I set it up :)

I shot with one studio light for fill on Nicole's face and she sat in front of our Christmas tree to add the layer of bokeh behind her.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

If you try this out, I would love to see a link to your photo!

  1. Awesome job, Jack! Very creative. Thanks for putting up the diagram! I also have been experimenting with the bokeh effect. I will be putting some pictures up soon!:D Definitely going to try the picture frame technique.

  3. Cool idea...always better to do as many effects as possible without Photoshop...As much as I love Photoshop... :-)
